8 Swimming Pool Design Ideas for Homes With a Waterfront View on Long Island, NY

A home with a waterfront view should take advantage of that view, and a swimming pool could be the answer. An infinity pool is one choice, but it’s not the only one. Here are eight swimming pool ideas for homes with a waterfront view on Long Island, NY.

An Infinity Pool

As a sophisticated addition to your waterfront backyard, an infinity pool lets swimmers feel that they’re part of the open water. Setting an infinity pool on an expansive pool deck or lawn gives it a stronger presence. If you prefer the pool to be an integral part of its hillside setting, the infinity pool can be nestled into the landscape with a natural backdrop of boulders and lush native vegetation to give the illusion that this is where the water begins.

A Pool That Follows the Sight Line

If your waterfront backyard features a clear sight line to the water’s edge, such as two rows of trees heading toward the water’s edge, then placing a pool aligned with that sight line creates a stunning transition from the home to the waterfront. If there is no clear sight line (nothing specific that draws the eye to the water), then the pool can serve as the sight line, especially if it is flanked by a row of cedars.

A Pool That Follows the Waterfront Shape

No matter the shape of the waterfront (a straight boardwalk, a curved cove, etc.), you can mirror that shape in a pool for a relaxed natural look. Pools can come in any shape you want, so if there’s a feature in the landscape that you want to incorporate into your poolscape, the pool could be worked around it.

The “Little Black Dress” Pool

For a more formal/traditional look, you may find that you can’t go wrong with the “little black dress” of pools—the classic rectangle. A rectangular pool’s straight lines will not overpower the home; its understated shape creates a sophisticated space. If you combine the rectangular shape with an infinity edge or a perimeter overflow, the pool takes on even more character and becomes a true focal point without detracting from the magnificence of the open water.

A Pool Deck With Natural Materials

Pool decks that use natural materials blend into the surrounding landscape. Whether you choose natural stone such as bluestone or manufactured stone alternatives (concrete pavers), you can achieve local flavor by matching the colors to locally available stone. For inspiration, look no further than the waterfront.

A Pool That Frames the View

Carefully placed accents at the pool’s edges can serve double duty in beautifying the space, and framing the water view. A few dramatic fire bowls set atop masonry pillars provide an elegant way to frame the view—which can be especially stunning at sunset. Avoid placing walls or fences between the pool and the waterfront so that the view isn’t obstructed. If a security fence is necessary, you could opt for clear glass.

A Pool With a Raised Spa

Step down toward the water’s edge by placing a hot tub at the highest level (closest to the house), followed by the pool, and then the open water. Not only is there a progression of sizes, but also temperatures.

A Pool With an Island

Give yourself the feeling of being on an island within your own little inland sea, by installing an island just big enough for two lounge chairs, right in the middle of the pool.
